What will it actually cost you?
Most home energy calculators ask you to type in your electricity and gas prices. Almost nobody knows them, so almost every answer is wrong. These look them up from your ZIP code instead.
Heat pump vs furnace
Whether a heat pump would cut your heating bill or raise it.
Energy rates by state
What electricity and gas cost across all fifty states.
AC replacement cost
What a new air conditioner should cost, and what it saves.
Solar payback
How long panels take to pay for themselves at your roof.
Look it up by state
If you would rather read a figure than fill in a form, every state has its own pages.
Average electric bill
What households actually pay each month, and how far it swings by season.
Cost to run air conditioning
Per hour and per year, which rank differently — price versus climate.
Cost to heat a home
Gas furnace against heat pump. The cheaper one changes with the state.
Heat pump cost
What one costs to install, and how long the savings take to repay it.
Furnace replacement cost
What a new gas furnace costs, and whether the efficient one repays.
Solar payback
How long panels take to repay themselves where the grid is expensive.
Where the numbers come from
Electricity and gas prices are published monthly by the US Energy Information Administration, per state, for the residential sector. Solar production is modelled by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory from real weather data at your coordinates. Every figure on this site shows which month it refers to.
Where we do not have a number for your state, we say so rather than quietly substituting a national average.
